Ruth Willet, KM4LAO, of Cana, Virginia, is the
ARRL Hiram Percy Maxim award winner for 2018. The Maxim award is presented by
the ARRL for exemplary service to amateur radio and the local community by a
ham under age 21. The ARRL Letter reports
that Willet, a 19-year-old junior at Kettering University in Michigan with a
double major in engineering physics and mechanical engineering, was
instrumental in restarting her college's amateur radio club. She is active in
recruiting and mentoring new hams, and was honored with a Radio Club of America
"Young Achiever" award earlier this year. The Maxim award includes a
stipend of $1500.
