Greene County, Ohio, Sheriff Gene Fischer, KX8GCS, was among the participants in the state Amateur Radio Emergen- cy Service's (ARES's) Simulated Emergency Test, or SET, this fall. Greene County is the new home of the Dayton Hamvention®, and Fischer got his ham license after working with the Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA) on the first Hamvention held in Xenia, in 2017.

According to DARA, Fischer checked into the SET net from his office and learned that, while his handheld was able to access the local weather net repeater, it was not sufficient to give him good simplex communication with the ARES Command Center at a local fire station.
