Contesting Pioneer Boris Stepanov, RU3AX, SK
Russian contesting legend and CQ Amateur Radio Hall of Fame member Boris Stepanov, RU3AX (ex-UW3AX), became a Silent Key on July 28 at age 76. The ARRL Letter reports that he had been been ill for quite a while.
A 2016 hall of fame inductee, Stepanov was a longtime deputy editor of Russia’s Radio magazine, was a pioneer of computerized contest logging and log-checking, developed the prototype for the World Radiosport Team Championships (WRTC) and was the first to propose the “glass cockpit” for ham transceivers, combining frequency readout and a spectrum scope on the front-panel display.
