The Wireless Institute of
Australia (WIA) has presented its Technical Excellence Award for this year to
Andy Nguyen, VK3YT, whose vinyl party balloons carrying amateur radio
transmitters have repeatedly circled the globe – sometimes more than once – and
have sparked tremendous interest among trackers around the world.

Amateur Radio News reports that many amateurs seen Nguyen's work as pioneering
a new era of small solar-powered balloons carrying amateur radio payloads. At
press time, Nguyen had launched at least 65 balloons carrying various amateur
