The South African Radio League (SARL) and
AMSAT-SA are teaming up to launch HamSCI SA. Based on similar Ham Radio Citizen
Science Investigation groups in the U.S. and the U.K., the new organization
will work to bring together hams and professional scientists to share research
and data collection. Two of the areas the new group plans to study, according
to the AMSAT News Service, are propagation at 5 MHz and possible ways to slow
or mitigate the rapid increases in the RF noise floor. The groups give amateurs
access to the cutting-edge research being by scientists in radio-related
fields, while the scientists can take advantage of a large number of data
collection points represented by participating hams.
