Longtime QST DX Editor Rod Newkirk, W9BRD/VA3ZBB, passed away in mid-November at age 90. According to the ARRL, Newkirk wrote QST's "How's DX?" column from 1947 to 1978 and was
credited with (unintentionally) introducing the term "Elmer" into the
amateur vernacular as a reference to a ham radio mentor. Rod was also a member
of the CQ DX Hall of Fame (inducted in 1984) and the CQ Amateur Radio Hall of
Fame (2002). He had lived in Canada since 1997.
