Milestones: NC1L, Other Prominent Hams Become SKs

Former ARRL DXCC and Awards Manager Bill Moore, NC1L, became a Silent Key in early October. According to the ARRL Letter, Moore was seriously injured in a traffic accident in 2014 which resulted in his being paralyzed from the chest down. He was 64.

Owen Wormser, K3CB (ex-K6LEW), became a Silent Key on October 16 at age 78. A well-known VHFer and former owner of C3i Antennas, Wormser had also served previously as Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Air Force and, back in ham radio, as president of the National Frequency Coordinators' Council. According to the ARRL, he had been diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this year.

Also passing away in October were prominent contester Paul Obert, K8PO, of Union, Maine; repeater linking pioneer John Crockett, W3KH, and, while not an amateur, Navajo Code Talker Dan Akee, Sr. (Read more about these often-unsung heroes World War II and a ham radio connection in "N7C: Celebrating the Navajo Code Talkers," in the upcoming December issue of  CQ.)
